 A quick lession with MobileRMT...

Myofascial Release-->“Myo“ means muscle and the fascia is the matrix that the body is suspended in.  Every bone, organ and muscle (even every muscle fiber) has its own pocket of fascia to sit in.  This fascia, when healthy and hydrated has the ability change and adapt to stresses placed on the body.  When your alignment is continually stressed like it may be sitting at a desk, fascia can build thicker lines of support to compensate. These areas of increased fascial connections also function as protective mechanisms from the result of injury, and are usually involved in chronic pain.

This fascia is affected through many manual modalities; Structural Integration, Neuromuscular Therapy, Deep Tissue Massage, Soft Tissue Release, Sports Massage, Craniosacral and others.  This work is very specific and often induces a stretching sensation along with increased heat to the treated area.  This modality has been one of my go-to modalities as I find that creating space within the body allows proper blood flow and easier pain free movement.

Every joint in the body houses many sensory receptors and like a sixth sense we can tell the position of our body in the dark or with our eyes closed, this is called proprioception.

With that knowledge...
Muscles only do what the nerves tell them to do, and since every muscle is crossing one or more joint, there is a way to communicate to a tense muscle through joint manipulation.  By putting a joint in a position of comfort, the reflexive nervous response is to tell the muscles crossing that joint to relax. Similarly an anteriorly rotated pelvis is addressed by exaggerating the pattern found.  Pushing or pulling the hips further in the direction it is going allows the proprioception to reset.  It's like the brain thinks, "I don't have to work to be in this position because something else is doing it for me, I can let go".  This principal is true for any pattern in the body.
