-The Lund Hotel
A New Beginning at the End of Highway 101
At the gateway to Desolation Sound, at the end of Highway 101, the Lund Hotel presents itself in new splendour to the public.
The 100+ year old facility was built by the Swedish Thulin brothers at the end of the 19th century. Fred Thulin had left his home in Sweden in 1889 and set eyes on the bay that would be Lund on March 18; the same year. Fred was not the first settler who recognized the area's ideal setting. Sliammon, Homalco and Klahoose people had used the bay as a year round village site for thousands of years. To them it was known as Gl'amin. The village was home of dozens of families. The brothers Thulin pre-empted the land around 1890 and re-named the area 'Lund' because the word was easy to remember and easy to spell.
In 1892 the first post office was established, the second one north of Vancouver. The Thulin brothers then opened a small general store and in 1894 the first hotel license was issued - the first one north of Vancouver. Lund and the Hotel quickly developed into a hub of coastal activity and to this day the Hotel remains at the heart of this small community.
Times were not always easy for the Hotel. During the last century it changed ownership frequently. In receivership and a sad state of disrepair, the Lund Hotel closed its doors in 1998.
On November 15th 2000, the Sliammon Development Corporation, the economic development arm of the Sliammon First Nation, in partnership with Powell River entrepreneur David Formosa, purchased the decaying property, marina and RV park. A major renovations project commenced in December.
The building was jacked up and new foundations and support beams were installed throughout all three floors. The heat, fire and electrical systems were upgraded to code. New hardwood floors were laid and a spacious lobby was created. The pub was moved to its original location and a sundeck was added, allowing patrons to savour the salty ocean breeze. Historic photographs telling the story of Lund now dress the walls and all guestrooms are decorated with handpainted murals by local artist Debra Bevaart. Outside an extensive gardening project restored lawns and flowerbeds and a gazebo with hot tub overlooking Finn Bay was added.
The Hotel now features:
31 Guest Rooms: The guest rooms offer views, in-room coffee service, telephones and TV/VCR combinations!
